How Paper Material was Prepared in the Glamorgan Archive Format
The task of creating the paper archive to of the masses of programs, newspapers, posters etc occupied much of the first few months of the project.
As all the paper stuff will go to the Glamorgan Archive we had the volunteer training day there way back in spring.
Their technology for maintaining, or as was pointed out, slowing down inevitable decay, is impressive. Although they are not as hopeful, even with the latest techniques, of being able to keep late 20th century paper as long into the future as their collection of 15th and 16th century manuscripts, or in as good condition.
The Glamorgan Archivists informed opinion of the longevity medieval parchment or vellum v. industrialised cheap and flimsy paper is that paper hasn't got a chance of outlasting the older material. So will anyone be able to look at an actual NoFit State Bianco or Treasure Island program in 400 years time? We'll have to wait and see! In truth no-one knows how long they will last, but there is room for optimistically assuming that technology will preserve them for a couple of centuries at least. Have to come back in another life and find out!
On the technical side all the volunteer learnt the way Glamorgan Archives procedure to prepare paper material, which briefly was:
· No ink on boxes or grey folders. Use 2B pencils
·
Staples to be removed and replaced by paper clip, with acid-free slip
·
Photos to go into appropriate sleeve size (don’t force them, go up a size if necessary)
·
The photos go in bundles with white tape, tied in a bow at the side
·
If any photo bundles have been set aside (“the good stuff”, etc) then use a tie-on label (and use the archive pen)
·
Grey folders should be used for scripts, letters, etc
